The first letter that Walton sends to his sister starts with him describing his surroundings, using this Shelly presents ambition as Walton connects everything with his upcoming adventure. This breeze, which has travelled from the regions towards which I am advancing, gives me a foretaste of those icy climes. This shows how it is ever on his mind and the full extent of his ambition. Also when he does think of his future destination (the pole) he knows it is dangerous and could deplete him but as he says it ever presents itself to my imagination as the region of beauty and delight. This shows how he sees it as a bewitching place to discover and how his ambition to go in that respect prevents him eyesight it in a bad light. Shelly also conveys how Walton sees his future discovery as almost supernatural when saying I may there discover wondrous power which attracts the needle. This is him saying that there must be something there that gains the compass needles attention, not only the Earths magnetic field.
This idea of discovery is repeat throughout the first letter when he says a take apart of the world never before visited, and may tread a land never before imprinted by the foot of man. This ambition of Waltons is one of the main themes when he describes it as existence his favourite dream, how he went once against his fathers dying injunction and how he can remember the hour when he dedicated himself to this vast enterprise.
