Descartes says humans and animals are different in that humans end reason and animals cant because they do not have souls. He proves how the physical structure and soul can live without each other. The body is a big hunk of energy able to complete different tasks to survive, but cannot reason or judge in a situation. The soul on the other hand allows rational thoughts to come to mind. God created a rational soul and conjugate it to this body in a particular manner to resemble man (Descartes 26). The soul does not need the body to puzzle alive nor does the body need a soul.
The body can lose all of its energy and die, but the soul will continue to live. Likewise, the body can be completely scatter from the soul and still function as a being living mainly on instincts.
