The sturdy walnut tree stands alone in the yard, a single foundation gar custodyt dangling beneath the dense foliage. That foot is mine, or it was several days ago, and I was in my pre-algebra class. I often climbed that old tree to study during my nine years as a home drill student. That tree represents the larger memory of an amazingly unique and diverse educational environment. Free from a constituted classroom environment, I tackled my education on my own terms. I shifted through shale in Re earthly concern to find a refined maple-seed fossil, learned about the Hanford Nuclear Project straight from men who exploited it, and taught English to Rina and other orphans in Kampong Som, Cambodia. I poured exertion into my studies, teaching myself the rudiments of sign-language and Spanish. Having no minimal arrest of acceptability, I saw how high I could leap. I wasnt aware how unusual this attitude was until I entered the public school system as a sophomore and saw my work compared with traditional expectations. My curiosity and perseverance, developed while homeschooling, helped me thrive in the new environment. I dived into the new challenges.

In my first competition, I went to nationals with my research paper on the history of cement. My junior year, I moved on to a third learning environment, Everett companionship College, through the duel-accreditation Running Start program. There I move on my independence and diversity of thought from my homeschooling years, and my adaptability to structure from my public school experience, to expand even further beyond the kitchen range of a traditional education. My window still frames that old walnut tree, a silent witness to the fun and freedom of a unique educational environment.
