For my final paper, I have chosen to write virtually the fifth chapter, The Frontier: Imperial Strategy and Defense of Empire. In this chapter E.N. Lutwak and B. Isaac have very conflicting points of view regarding their topics. Luttwak talks more or less the grand strategy of the roman Empire and their different defense mechanism tactics that they used. Whereas, Isaac contests his views on the grand strategy and goes on to address why his theory is in fact, wrong. Luttwak states that the two essential requirements of an evolving politeness [are] a sound material base and adequate protective covering (279). This means that one of the main goals of the Roman Empire was to stick out security. Security was a primary concern to the Romans as their soldiers were not exactly superior it to their opponents in fighting but, they thought that the scoop up security was their best option. Luttwak goes on to say that the Romans used mental power as they realized that it was much stronger than their actual somatogenic military groups. Luttwak explains that, the product of others perceptions of Roman strength rather than the use of this strength would make others fear them and put the Romans at an advantage without having to truly fight (281). He emphasizes a logical approach to analyzing the Roman motives for war.

He emphasizes the ways that they could enhance security and their thought processes ring it. Luttwak uses the siege of Masada to back up his argument and discusses that in this lawsuit the Romans used their psychological power instead of physical might. Masada was a perfect example of psychological warfare. He explains, for a unspotted blind obstinacy in pursuing the siege would be utterly inconsistent with all that we know of protagonists, especially Vespasian- that some practical of men, the emperor whose chief virtue was a sharp-worded common sense (281).
